Heavy winter storms, freezing rain, wet snow and even high-speed winds can all lead to power outages. These blackouts can last days and sometimes weeks depending on the severity of the damage, leaving you and your family without heat, light or a means to cook. In actuality you no longer have to add any additives to your gas tank. Most all regular gas now contains 10% ethanol. I was a certified master mechanic for twenty years and remember how the ethanol took care of most all gas line freezing. The ethanol evaporates any moisture in the gas tank, ethanol is what most of the gas line freeze additives are made of. Now if your engine is a diesel, you have two options add #1 fuel to your #2(usual fuel for diesel engines) or you can buy an additive. Both will keep the diesel fuel from waxing (jelling). I am explaining this not to argue but to simply teach.

Actually Ricky the alcohol does not "evaporate" the water in the gas line. Ethanol and water are both polar molecules and there fore alcohol is very soluble in water (like dissolves like). The aqueous alcohol solution has a lower freezing point than water, and therefore does not freeze in the gas line like water does. Water is not soluble in gasoline because it is a polar molecule while gasoline is a mixture of many distillates of petroleum all of which are non-polar so the water freezes in gasoline at very low temperatures in a gas line. I was national board certified physics teacher with a Maters Degree from UW - Madison and 30+ years teaching high school and technical college. This is not to argue just to teach.

When its cold we are informed it is the "polar vortex" and beware frost bite. We are besieged with all sorts of scientific terminology and explanation.

However, when its warm, we are simply told its "global warming", called ignorant and labelled Deniers and reminded we have less than 12 years before man-kind is called home...unless we pay a carbon tax that can be redistributed back to the common man and foreign countries in a way that only the liberals determine. The cost of redemption.

Who would have thought saving the planet could be so easy...just enact a tax! Nah, I'll just wait for the next polar vortex.

Rick's advice is right on. One local newscaster said last night that with the 40 - 50 below wind chill numbers we're going to have, it would take about 5 minutes to get frost bite on any exposed skin. That's just plain dangerous, folks, literally. Don't mess with that. Keep you kids, your pets and yourselves inside. Some teen age high school boys like going to school just wearing a hoodie sweatshirt. That is not an option for the next few days. MAKE your kid bundle up properly, or the consequences could be very uncomfortable or even dangerous. Again, don't mess with this. Also, Kwik Trip has a generic version of HEAT gasoline anti-freeze for $1.79 a bottle. Right now, using either HEAT or Kwik Trip's version is a very good investment.
