The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse remains one of the best public universities in the region, according to U.S. News & World Report’s rankings.

The campus ranks fourth among public schools in its category, and its the 16th year in a row that UW-L has been the top-ranked UW System school outside of Madison. UW-Madison was not included in the regional rankings because U.S. News & World Report considers it a national university, ranking it 10th public overall.

UW-L is also listed among the publication’s A-Plus Schools for B Students, which recognizes campuses that help middle-of-the-road students succeed.

More than 1,400 accredited, four-year schools are compared in the rankings, and the factors weighed include peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. Complete listings are available at

“We’re delighted to be the No. 1 comprehensive university in the UW System and among the top four regional universities in the country,” UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow said. “This is wonderful external recognition of the outstanding work being done each day by our faculty, staff and students. We’re very proud of this respected reputation.”

Truman State University in Missouri remained the top public university in the Midwest with the University of Northern Iowa at No. 2, followed by Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Among all private and public Midwest universities, UW-L was in a four-way tie for 31st.
