Brace yourself for more road construction – from the Interstate 90 bridge to downtown La Crosse.
Motorists exiting I-90 to travel south on Hwy. 61 will be detoured 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday while the old bridge over the highway and the railroad tracks are demolished, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Eastbound I-90 motorists who want to travel south on Hwy. 61 toward La Crescent should take exit 267. The detour takes motorists south into La Crescent to connect with Hwy. 61.
Westbound I-90 motorists who want to travel south on Hwy. 61 toward La Crescent should take exit 3 in La Crosse, travel downtown, then take the Hwy. 14/16/61 bridge into La Crescent.
In downtown La Crosse, State Street will be closed between Third and Fourth streets from May 9 to 27 to accommodate street paving and curb and gutter work connected to the Belle Square project on the site of the former La Crosse County Lot C.
Next month’s closure should be the final one associated with the $68 million downtown development, according to project manager Cory Henschel of CD Smith.
The company will install new curb and gutter and repave the street with asphalt in preparation for Associated Bank’s opening in Belle Square June 27.

“We need to have the paving, sidewalks and everything complete,” Henschel said. “Basically, their driveway comes up Fourth Street and exits onto State Street. At that point, we have to open State Street up 100 percent.”
After the repaving is finished, State and Fourth streets will be open for the duration of the Belle Square construction.
In addition to Associated Bank, the 255,000-square-foot complex will also house 93 apartments, an unidentified cafe, dentist operation and office space.
