I have had the great pleasure of playing in the La Crosse Concert Band every summer for more than a decade. I am not paid to play. I play for the sheer joy of making music with - and for - my friends in La Crosse's beautiful riverside setting.
I also cherish La Crosse's long and colorful history and the old structures that still stand to remind us of it. However, I think the public should be aware that any bandstand that lacks a roof allows most of the sound to disappear into the sky without ever reaching the audience.
This is very frustrating for the musicians, and anyone who attended our indoor concert last summer will, I think, agree that they heard much more than they would have heard outdoors.
I therefore urge that, whatever is done with the present bandstand, a shell with a roof should be built as soon as possible. A bandshell is first and foremost a place to make music, not just a monument
