I was disappointed last week to see such low voter turnout on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus by students and in the lack of organization by the university to make it so students living in the residence halls have the opportunity to vote.
By 11 a.m., poll workers at UW-L had turned away far more students than had actually voted because students did not have the proper documents to register to vote. Even though the state’s voter ID bill is not entirely into effect, we already have seen devastating effects of it on campus.
I don’t believe that it should be up to one campus organization (the College Democrats) to ensure students in the residence halls have the proper documentation to cast their votes.
It is my hope that by the Nov. 8 election, multiple organizations on campus and the UW-L administration will have come up with a solution for students living on campus to possess the proper documents so they are able to practice their civic duty on election days and vote.
