WisEye Morning Minute: Mandating Civics Education in K-12 Schools

On Wednesday, as reported by, the Assembly Committee on Education held a second public hearing on Assembly Bill 563 which would mandate civics education in K-12 schools. The bill would require schools to teach students they are responsible for "preserving and defending" the U.S. Constitution and showcase in curriculum differences between capitalist America's "principles of freedom" and philosophies like socialism. Under the measure, social studies credits students must complete to graduate from high school would include one-half credit of the proposed "civics instruction" curriculum. The bill would require State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly to establish rules to develop this curriculum. This segment features committee members Rep. Robert Wittke (R-Racine) and Rep. Don Vruwink (D-Miltion) discussing an amendment to increase accountability.
