MADISON - A federal grand jury has indicted a tax preparer and a loan officer with allegedly securing more than $8 million in fraudulent loans.

According to a statement from federal prosecutors in Madison, the indictment accuses 44-year-old tax preparer Gail Mendez of Sun Prairie of working with 42-year-old Amy Strait, a loan officer at Park Bank in Madison, to secure about 50 home loans with false tax returns and obstructing an Internal Revenue Service investigation.

Mendez's attorney did not immediately return a message. Online court records did not list Strait's case or an attorney late Thursday afternoon.

Mendez was indicted in October for allegedly defrauding AmTrust Bank out of more than $3.3 million in loans.
