School district: Free-speech protects those in viral photo

In this May 2018 photo provided by Peter Gust, a group of Wisconsin high school boys stand on the steps outside the Sauk County Courthouse in Baraboo, Wis. The image has drawn widespread condemnation because of the appearance that some of the students are giving a Nazi salute. BARABOO, Wis. (AP) — Officials with a Wisconsin school district have outlined a plan they hope will instill more empathy and understanding in students after a photograph recently surfaced showing several high school boys giving what appears to be a Nazi salute.

In a letter to parents Tuesday, the Baraboo School District listed 13 "educational steps" it will take in response to the photo, which sparked widespread condemnation when it was posted on social media .

Among those steps are including annual field trips to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, Illinois, and adding Holocaust speakers to middle school curriculum.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the district also plans a day of peace assemblies on Dec. 18 for high school students.

District officials have said free-speech rights prevent them from disciplining those involved. The photo of about 60 boys was taken outside the Sauk County Courthouse in Baraboo last spring.
