Money played a role, apparently big, big money, and so did history, misconceptions, radicalization of the innocent and feminist anger for a guy named Trump.

The story is that the Republicans lost the House and that the nation lost, too.

It lost glorious opportunities for still more prize-worthy legislation and majoritarian protection from anti-democratic Democratic malevolence.

A Republican House, on the legislative side, did what a Democratic House would never do, for instance: It helped give us a tax-reform package saying here’s a job, there’s a job, everywhere is a job, job, job. The Democrats said wait, the tax cuts are just for the rich and, anyway, where are wage hikes?

Well, they are now surrounding us, and that’s what happens when you get out of the way of American businesses, not just by reducing overly high taxes, but also scotching disruptive, mindless regulations that give worthy regulations a bad name. And, on top of instigating economic growth that helps the poor more than any welfare program, the cuts did reduce taxes more for the middle class than the rich.

Democrats won’t admit that. It makes them feel unneeded.

And so they misled you, and it’s a worry that they will play budget tricks and won’t line up behind any reasonable remedy to anything.

Instead, some say, they’ll be preoccupied with impeachment, investigations and any means they can think of to yank the chair out from under a seated president.

Concerning policy options, some Democrats have also found it pays to be socialistic because all kinds of young voters are socialistic and, if history has never allowed socialism to succeed, maybe it can be persuaded to change its mind.

Despite all of that, the Democrats did grab gobs of cash from evil Wall Street and vastly outspent Republicans on smothering TV ads, perhaps hoping they would minimize mindfulness to a state of support.

Divisiveness, thou art enshrined, and, given President Donald Trump’s cockamamie, vituperative tweets and speeches, it’s not just the fault of intellectual meandering about the end of America.

It’s not just campuses gone wacko. It is not just wide-eyed mobs letting their narrow minds rule.

It is not only decapitation jokes or some urban dwellers believing most rural, blue-collar types are racist barbarians at the gates.

No, Trump has contributed to the point of engendering hate expressing itself in terms his own stumbling tongue cannot equal.

Of course, the president’s party consistently loses loads of House seats in midterm elections, and none of this is to say that Democratic voters were without legitimate concerns, even if a bit off sometimes. Many Democratic votes, we know, came from suburban women whose fears are said to include the possibility of a refashioned Supreme Court repealing the Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

That’s actually as far-fetched as thinking it will repeal women’s rights to vote. And meanwhile lots of Americans understood how dishonest and close to subversive the Democrats were in their attempts to stop Senate approval of Brett Kavanaugh as a justice.

That’s likely one reason Republicans increased their majority in a Senate that will still be able to deliver on judges and justices. That’s hugely important if you dislike liberal justices amending the Constitution through so-called interpretations.

I, for one, was pleased to see former presidential candidate Mitt Romney elected to the Senate from Utah; I look forward to his leadership and remember President Barack Obama mocking him for viewing Russia as an enemy.

Interesting, isn’t it, that the disreputable Russian-collusion probe was hardly brought up by the Democrats in this outing and that Trump still connects sufficiently with the American people to have likely made a difference in some races?

These are disorienting times we live in, but the pollsters were pretty much right, as opposed to flubs in 2016. If they get good enough, will TV news shows devoting nine-tenths of their time to predictions come to consider elections unnecessary?

Can anyone at the paper tell me why you are deleting my comments? Anyone?

Wow, caped! Well-said, indeed.

When zerokok says : "trust me"!!! what"s that really mean? Stick it in my.... where???
He"s trusted as far as a "barge pole". The name SHOULD be anonymous.
He is assuredly trying to "cook the book".

DaisyL

No, I'm not a council member or belong to any subversive group in LaCrosse county or elsewhere. Just thought it might be a reason that you hate the anonymous posts.

Rick Czeczok

I really don't mind anonymous posters until they overstep and start name calling and with personal attacks. Just know that this group on here started the attacks on me and they all tried the gang attack method they use to drive people off of here. I just don't walk away from a fight, taht's what they fear, that and accountability, making money, or anyone who doesn't think like they expect people to think like. Pretty sad but well organized group. Now watch them come even though I didn't mention any of them by name. They just get paranoid real easily. I find it funny actually, as they are so predictable. But sad as people are afraid to post their thoughts because they know what will happen. I post my name to show that I'm not ashamed of my life, not saying I did everything right but I don't have the skeletons many of these attackers have. OK bring it boys. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Dang, Daisy, I guess I was wrong at our last big meeting at John's on Third Street. I didn't think Ricky would figure out that we're all in cahoots on this concentrated effort to make Ricky look like a fool by pointing out that he hasn't got a thing to say that makes any sense at all, and his efforts to say what he thinks he wants to say are hopelessly, hilariously muddled. I guess we will have to have another big meeting to figure out a new way to attack him. Perhaps if we pretend that he makes perfect sense and is amazingly articulate and elegant of phrase, he will quit this heroic, monumental stand he has taken against us. I mean, as superbly organized as we are with all that George Soros money backing us, this lone, lonely but heroic figure continues to stand up and defy us and our nefarious plans for driving all people who disagree with us away from posting on these "discussion" boards. I don't know how long Mr. Soros will keep us in beer money at John's if we don't back him off soon. How does he know we would be so predictable, dammit??? The man is a genius! Here we have dozens afraid to post because of our meanness and demanding people speak the truth on these boards, and now he comes along and exposes us! It almost makes me want to join him in supporting that great moral leader of his, Donald Trump. In fact, I am considering it. I hope Ricky doesn't spoil it by laughing at me again. That is the cruelest thing about Ricky, his laughter. How could such a powerful, thoughtful, effective human being like him be so good-natured, to boot? Let's talk this over at our meeting at John's on Wednesday, but don't mention to anybody else but the gang members about the meeting. We don't want no moles coming in and spying on us.

Aside from reading Jay Ambrose commentary & getting annoyed with his constant bro love of all things Trump, there is the constant comment and angst from Rick Czeczok who wants the reveal of real names of all who comment. I'd actuallly be afraid of Rick knowing my real name for fear he'd be at my doorstep or robo hate calling my phone because of any comment I made. Not sure why this psuedo name bothers him so much or why it should even make a difference to him. Perhaps he feels common council members hiding behind their name. A mystery to me for sure.

Rick Czeczok

Trust me, I respect everyone and would never do anything as stupid as that. My point is simple, it is easy for people to attack people and say things that just are not true when they can not be held accountable. I have always treated people with respect, except for this organized group of socialist activist on here, who attack and gang up on anyone who comes on here giving an opinion other then their own. I didn't start the negative comments I post on here, they did, a long time ago when they tried their group attack on me. I will never attack anyone on their opinion unless they attack me. Then it's game on. I assume you believe a person has a right to defend themselves. This group of socialist do this type of thing on most papers who have opinion pages that let you respond. They are the reason that you can not comment on a letter to the editor because they would literally crucify and gang up on anyone who was not with them. Don't let them fool you, they are well organized nationwide group and have been thrown off many papers. This paper seems to love the dividedness and the controversy, sells papers my guess. Not so sure some of the comments are not their own writers.

PhysicsIsFun

you know what Ricky? You are a bag of hot air that never says anything remotely interesting or informative. You complain about name calling, but you are the first one to start name calling. That is your modus operandi. Now everyone who disagrees with you is part of a socialist gang. What a sick burn! I am so stung by your cleverness. Go back to whatever redneck confab you came from. When you have something constructive to add I'll be all ears. I'm sure there are some bolts that need tightening somewhere.

Rick Czeczok

Blah, blah, blah, whatever. Your so funny HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

PhysicsIsFun

Ricky I know you are super intelligent but for future reference so as not to undermine you credibility, it is "you're so funny" not "your so funny" (sic).

Rick Czeczok

Wait, what? Why would you bring the council member thing up? Where did that come from? Are you on the council, that's the only reasonable explanation for that comment out of the blue. If you are on the council, THAT would explain your reasoning for the comment and your anonymity. Also if you are on the council? That would be pretty disgusting that you did that, in a public format. Please deny that you are not in city government here if not I have to assume you are.

martian2

I suggest we all totally ignore comments that are not related to the discussion subject. Just ignore the comments that have personal jabs or childish name calling. Don't respond at all to these middle school antics and maybe Mr Tribune will see fit not to show those types of comments. I am only going to respond to posts that deal with the subject under discussion. Maybe if we all do that, those deplorables will go some where else. Ever notice that all those types are right wingers, its very revealing. Be sure to also hit the "report" tab when any of those comments surface.

Rick Czeczok

Personally I believe a split government is the best government. So I disagree with this article saying anything was lost. Maybe to politicians things were lost, but personally again I don't really care about them. I care about giving average Americans the best chance at a good life. The legislation branch should do just that legislate, and stop showboating to getting on TV as much as they possibly can, simply to to feed their own selfish lifestyle, and stop trying to be an arm of the Judicial branch.

oldhomey

I am shocked, Ricky. SHOCKED. The position you take in your 8:37pm post fits hand in glove with President Trump's fake analysis of the outcome of the recent election and loss of Republican control of the House of Representatives. Who would have thunk that Ricky Czecsok would agree with Trump on this?

But yes, Ricky, your crystal clear reasoning explains the depth of your political perception. It makes SO much sense that, now that the Senate is firmly, rabidly in the Trump camp and the House is in control of a Democrats who deeply oppose and fear Trumpism, we will see a rush of bi-partisan, good-fo-all-of-us legislation pouring out of Congress, benignly shepherded and encouraged by the superb political and humanitarian instincts of Donald Trump. Thank you for your penetrating insight, Ricky.

oldhomey

Column after column, Mr. Ambrose builds on his record as being the absolute worst political commentator in the business. Hoo Boy! Try this on for size: "the (GOP tax) cuts did reduce taxes more for the middle class than the rich." Wasn't it brilliant how he then illustrated how this amazing observation is supported by hard, true evidence? Oh, wait. He didn't support that statement at all, perhaps because there is no evidence existing that would support it.

PhysicsIsFun

When Huckleberry Sanders quits Jaybird should get her job. He makes about as much sense as she does.

Rick Czeczok

Or how about you? You seem to think you are smarter then anyone. Your retired so why don't you give your real name. What are you afraid of? ACCOUNTABILITY, something you fear more then anything. Isn't that right? No, then what's your name? Didn't think so so go back hiding. Shameless, here's another guy that blows your theory to bits. It's all about saying whatever you want without facts or proof just to spread division and hate. These people are socialist activist that are very organized, catch on.

PhysicsIsFun

I don't think I am smarter than "anyone". I do think Ricky that I am smarter than you. You sound like a raving lunatic. Maybe you should get a job in the Trump administration. Is that what you are auditioning for? It worked for Whitaker.

Rick Czeczok

I would debate you one on one any day pal.

oldhomey

Oh, my! That would be a spectacle! Ricky standing behind a podium in an open debate with Physics, with Ricky having to be accountable in front of God and country for all the false and incoherently wrong information that he "informs" his opinions with.

Comment deleted.
Rick Czeczok

Did you ever once here me exclude anyone from my anonymous standard, no. Once again you and Physics are babbling and twisting words to fit your needs. Just not being held accountable for any of your comments as no one knows who you are. Pretty sad actually, especially as physics was a teacher and preached accountability. Guess in the liberal sense it's do as I say not as I do. Frauds.....

oldhomey

Well said, Physics. Here is some of Mr. Ambrose's peerless analysis: He tells us that the economy, which continues on a growth continuum that resulted from the Obama administration's efforts to save us from a full-blown depression after the GOP-led recession, is all due to the brilliance of Trump economic policy, for which the business community is deeply grateful. Then he sternly tells us: "Despite all of that, the Democrats did grab gobs of cash from evil Wall Street and vastly outspent Republicans on smothering TV ads, perhaps hoping they would minimize mindfulness to a state of support." Yes, the business community was just throwing hundreds of millions of dollars to the Democrats. Perhaps he could point out some of these big donations. Or is he ignoring the fact that most of that money came from little donations from little people like myself, earnest contributions running in the $10 to $250 range from ordinary joe and jane dokes who are sickened by Donald Trump, what he represents, and the sort of thinking of his blinded followers that Mr. Ambrose himself represents.

Rick Czeczok

Where do you get your facts? What you just stated about Trump donations has and is totally false and it has been studied and reported on by the New York Times Washington Post etc. Just more twisting of facts and no accountability for statements as no one knows your real name. Stop hiding and come out with your real name. What is it you have to loose?

oldhomey

Hmm. I don't think I said anything about Trump's campaign funding. In fact, he was not a candidate in the recent election, so he had no campaign fund. And certainly I said nothing about Trump donations. As the Washington Post and NYTimes have amply demonstrated in the past, Trump rarely donates money, and when he does, it is usually in one form or another to himself. He may well be indicted once out of the presidency for the criminal operation of his family foundation money.

Rick Czeczok

OLD HOMEY read what you wrote. Now you are twisting your own words, really.....

Rick Czeczok

Coming from a guy who had to work until he was 71 because he was foolish with his money and then had to be bought out by his company to get rid of him. This in a time when workers can't be found and employees are looking for older workers says a lot about you. So why should I listen to anything you have to say about or to me. I have no respect for you what so ever. Your negative, dividing, one sided messages just amuse me and make me laugh that you think anyone but your group listens. Nice try though. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

oldhomey

As you say in this same string, Ricky, in your comment at 2:10pm, it is "game on". I have read my comment, and nowhere does it say the things you impute it to say. Don't tell me to read my own words to prove your point. Instead, point out my words that support your case. You won't because you can't. You are Ricky Czeczok. a man who tarnishes his own name consistently on these boards and then blames everybody else for tarnishing him.

oldhomey

Ricky? Why have you fallen silent all of a sudden? Hmm. Have you realized you lost your argument?

johnnybragatti

Trump would repeal women's right to vote, if he could. They will beat him , in the head and in the end., with a little help from Millenials and younger.

shameless

I'm impressed that Jay held off until the third to last paragraph to mention President Obama. He must be getting soft in his old age.

martian2

I haven't seen this much crying and whining since the Dodgers lost the world series. Jay always delivers on the whatabout Obama argument, he never disappoints on that.
