Excellent articles last week in the Tribune illuminate the very differing visions of the two candidates vying to be La Crosse’s next mayor.
Vicki Markussen’s lengthy experience serving La Crosse’s business and civic organizations is admirable. However, at the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce forum, a response she made was very telling. Asked what she might do if there were some unanticipated revenue, she replied: Put it all away for a rainy day.
More than a year into the pandemic, many here among us are already drenched. For members of communities long struggling to keep their heads above water, they are now treading for dear life.
Mitch Reynolds, at the Tuesday night’s UU La Crosse Mayoral Candidate Debate, laid out his vision: “Let’s get out of the process of criminalization of some of our social problems.” Our police are overburdened dealing with overlapping crisis situations. So often, the root causes are societal problems, ones that have festered since the founding of our country. Reynolds’ vision is to pull out a few of these damaged roots, and plant a few new ones to foster growth in our community.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton lived his life by a motto: “ I’m not throwing away my shot.” In this time of pandemic, let’s all get our vaccines. And let’s not throw away our chance to vote for a future that could be much brighter than our current dark times.
