A statue of Sister Thea Bowman, foreground, is among four honoring major contributors to the arts in Birder Hall, a new venue at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. Bowman's statue, hand-carved like the others from solid limewood by the Albl family of Oberammergau, Germany, represents liturgical dance. She is holding “Lead Me, Guide Me: The African American Catholic Hymnal” the first Catholic songbook aimed at the black community, which she helped create in 1987. The others include St. Hildegard of Bingen, representing the visual arts; C.S. Lewis, signifying literature, and King David, a symbol for music.
