FSC plans journaling retreat

  • 0

It’s hard to spend time in nature and not encounter the divine, says artist and environmental educator Janet Moore. She and writer and educator Jan Wellik will help participants connect more deeply with themselves, nature, each other and God during the art journaling retreat, “St. Francis and the Natural World” on April 17-19 at the Franciscan Spirituality Center, 920 Market St.

The weekend experience will kick off with a bookbinding workshop using recycled materials, and include guided drawing and writing exercises outside in nature, quiet time for reflection and contemplation, and exploration of the writings of St. Francis.

No previous artistic or writing experience is necessary, said Moore, just a desire to connect with one’s own spirituality and creativity. “I hope people feel a sense of joy, wonder and renewal during this retreat,” she said.

Wellik has been leading nature writing retreats since 2004 and is the author of the “Nature Writing Field Guide for Teachers.” She has a doctorate in education from Hamline University and teaches writing and journalism at both Viterbo University and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Moore is an artist, botanical illustrator and environmental educator. She is completing her graduate studies in Environmental Education and Interpretation at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

This retreat is limited to 15 participants, and registration deadline is April 1. Call 608-791-5295 or visit for more information.
