ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A third-period rally by the 18th-ranked University of Wisconsin men's hockey team fell short, as No. 20 Michigan took advantage of first-period Badgers penalties for a 5-3 victory on Friday at Yost Ice Arena.

Three stars

No. 3: Michigan freshman Jack Becker, a former Badgers recruit, scored a critical second-period goal and added two assists.

No. 2: Ryan Wagner scored twice in the third period for UW.

No. 1: Hayden Lavigne made 37 saves for the Wolverines.

The Badgers and the Wolverines close the series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The University of Wisconsin men's hockey team has a one-point lead over Michigan for third place entering Friday's opener of a Big Ten Conference series at Yost Ice Arena (6:30 p.m., FSW Plus, 1310 AM).

With four of six remaining games on the road, the Badgers will have to get some points away from home if they're going to clinch a top-four spot and host in the first round of the playoffs.

It's '90s Night at Yost, which, if you're looking for signs, isn't a great one for UW. It was 0-2 here in the 1990s, losing College Hockey Showcase games in 1997 and 1999. Overall, the Badgers were 2-7-1 against Michigan in the decade, with one win in the NCAA semifinals (1992) and two losses in NCAA regional finals (1993, 1995).
