EAST LANSING, Mich. — John Lethemon made 41 saves for his third shutout of the season, and Michigan State got second-period goals by Jagger Joshua and Brody Stevens in a 3-0 victory over the No. 19 University of Wisconsin men's hockey team on Friday at Munn Ice Arena. The loss ensured that the Badgers will go into 2020 with a losing record.
No. 3: Tommy Miller's first goal of the season put the Spartans ahead 1-0 in the first period.
No. 2: Joshua gave Michigan State some breathing room in the second period.
No. 1: Lethemon frustrated the Badgers and got help from the post three times on Cole Caufield shots.
The Badgers close the first half of the season Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Michigan State.
The opening minutes should provide a lot of information when the No. 19 University of Wisconsin men's hockey team plays Michigan State at Munn Ice Arena on Friday (6 p.m., no TV, BTN Plus subscription stream, 1310 AM).
The Badgers will be looking to show more desire early in the game than they have in the last two weeks, a period in which they're 1-2-1. Another lackadaisical start will give the Spartans a chance to impose a more deliberate style on the game.
Scoring the first goal also will be critical: UW is 6-1-1 when it gets the opening score and 1-7 when it doesn't.
