No matter how hard the Aquinas High School girls basketball team tried, there was nothing it could do about Courtney Meyer.
The 6-foot-1 senior — an NCAA Division II University of West Florida recruit — scored a game-high 18 points to lead Onalaska to a 37-30 victory over the Blugolds in a MVC game at the Reinhart Athletic Complex on Friday.
“She’s tall,” said Aquinas coach Matt Watson, whose only player taller than 5-foot-7 is the 5-10 Chelsea Ritter. “We had a really hard time matching up with her. A lot of the time, our help didn’t get there in time.”
Aquinas (7-3, 1-1) held a 20-19 lead at the half, but Meyer’s nine-point fourth-quarter helped the Hilltoppers (8-0, 3-0) pull away.
“A lot of those points in the fourth quarter were free throws,” Watson said.
Katie McCauley added seven points for Onalaska.
Morgan Miller scored nine for Aquinas. Ritter, last year’s co-player of the year in the MVC, was held to seven as Aquinas scored just two points in the fourth quarter.
