The upcoming season will be Steve King’s 29th -- and last -- as the coach of the Holmen High School football team.
King announced to players Monday night his decision to retire from teaching after the 2015-2016 school year and stepping aside for a new coach to take over.
“I’ll be 62 years old when the school year ends, and it’s time,” said King, whose teams have compiled a 148-131 record in his 28 seasons. “I feel good about where the program is for the next coach because it won’t be a rebuilding process.
“Everyone around here has bought into what we are doing, and we have a solid program here.”
The Vikings are 26-6 over the last three seasons and should be one of the top teams in the MVC again in 2015.
King graduated from Holmen in 1972 and has been a physical education teacher there since 1987.
