ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School girls basketball team used an 11-point run in the first half to pull away from Winona and held a lead the rest of the way in a 59-44 nonconference victory Thursday night.
Senior Courtney Meyer scored 16 points and made 12 of 14 free throws to lead the Hilltoppers (3-0), who outscored the Winhawks (2-2) 18-8 in the second quarter for a 28-20 halftime lead.
Winona was led by sophomore Hailee Hoeppner’s 11 points and senior Audrey Scharmer’s 10 in a game it led 12-10 after one quarter.
Scharmer had seven first-quarter points, but also had her minutes limited after getting two quick fouls.
“I thought the post play was good on both sides,” Onalaska coach Rob Vieaux said. “I thought that was going to be a battle, and it was.
“I thought Courtney controlled the paint and had some nice moves to score and get to the line. She defended really well in there.”
The Hilltoppers, who had 15 offensive rebounds, made a 13-2 run after giving up the final two baskets of the first quarter. One of Natalie Soper’s four 3-pointers gave them a 23-14 lead.
Tayla Stuttley added 13 points, Soper 12 and Terra Stuttley 11 for Onalaska.
