Onalaska High School senior Matt Thomas qualified for the finals and finished third overall at the American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships on Friday.

Thomas, a 6-foot-4 guard who will play next season at Iowa State University, recorded the second-best preliminary score with a 23 in the

3-point contest, which was held Friday in Norcross, Ga., and televised nationally on Saturday.

The top four shooters in the prelims qualified for the final, and Thomas scored 15 points in that round for a third-place finish in a competition won by Kansas recruit Conner Frankamp.

Eight players were selected to compete, and they took five shots from five stations positioned around the 3-point line. The first four shots were worth one point, and the last ball at each rack was worth two for a perfect score of 30.

Thomas is a two-time Associated Press All-State first-teamer who scored more than 2,000 points in his Hilltoppers career, which ended with one WIAA Division 2 state title, one state runner-up finish and a 95-12 record (.888 winning percentage).
