The Tomah High School competitive cheer team has competed at three competitions this season, the last of which qualified the team for state.

Tomah won third place at the Wisconsin Rapids Regional Feb. 16 and earned a trip to the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches state competition

“This year the team is focusing on improving skills and making their routine harder since (it’s) a very young, inexperienced squad,” coach Kristi Mewis said.

The Tomah squad consists of three freshman, three sophomores and two seniors and has competed against larger squads with as  many as 17 girls.

The team has relied heavily on seniors Brittney Otis and Jackie Schenker.

“(They) have proven very valuable in building a strong routine, and they bring the only competition cheerleading experience to the mat,” Mewis said.
