Colman Melcher going to state

Viroqua No. 1 singles player Colman Melcher was named a special state qualifier for the WIAA Individual Boys Tennis State Tournament, based on his season record of 10-8. Melcher’s first round of state tennis is today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

The season isn’t over for Viroqua’s No. 1 singles player and special state qualifier Colman Melcher.

Melcher, a junior, is making his first state appearance at the WIAA Individual Boys Tennis State Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison this week. The individual state tournament runs today (Thursday) through Saturday.

Melcher’s first-round match is today (Thursday). Melcher faces Bailey Woodson of East Troy, another special qualifier, (14-7) at 4 p.m.

Melcher is the third Blackhawk in two years to make it the state tennis tournament as a special qualifier.

In 2012, Viroqua’s No. 1 doubles team of Shawn Achenbach, then a junior, and senior Ryan Schmidt were also special state qualifiers.

Melcher fell in his first match at the Division 2 sectional at Black River Falls, last Thursday, but was able to advance to  state on the strength of his season singles record at 10-8.

“I'm very excited for him to make his first appearance at state,” VHS boys tennis coach Layne Hanson said of Melcher.

Melcher fell Ashland’s Robert Quinlan, a state qualifier himself in 2012, 6-0, 6-1, last Thursday.

At last Thursday’s sectional, the Blackhawks’ No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams played their final matches.

Shawn Achenbach and Malachy Koons took their Eau Claire Regis to three sets.

Achenbach and Koons were even leading, 4-1, in the first, before being edged, 7-5, and but battled back to win the second set, 6-0.

In the third set, however, Achenbach and Koons were eliminated by Regis’ Garret Nowak and Michael Kozuch, falling 6-4.

I'm certain that if Malachy wasn't dealing with the shoulder injury, they would definitely finishing the season at the state tournament,” Hanson said. “They can be very proud of the great season they put together.

Together, Achenbach and Koons were 11-4 this season.

Meanwhile, Viroqua’s No. 2 doubles team of Wyatt Oldham and Brady Seland, too, drew a tough Regis team,  at the D2 sectional, falling 6-3, 6-3. Oldham and Seland then fell, 6-0, 6-1, to Altoona’s Connor Hanson and Matt Berry in the third-place match. Oldham and Seland finished in fourth place at the sectional

“It was a great accomplishment for them to finish their careers at the sectional level,” Hanson said.

Oldham and Seland had a record of 9-7.

Hanson loses not only Oldham and Seland and Achenbach , but senior Zach Lotz, too this season.
