The Viroqua boys golf team finished sixth overall in the Coulee Conference after two nine-hole matches at Viroqua Hills Golf Course, Monday, May 13.
The Blackhawks shot 182 on the Viroqua-hosted front nine of the course for fifth place. Arcadia and Luther tied for first with 169.
On the front nine, Jake Gardner and Cody Getter-Skrede each carded a 44; Troy Sanwick and Trevor Bolstad both tallied a 47.
On the back nine, which Westby hosted, Viroqua had a 168 and was sixth overall. This time, Arcadia led all Coulee teams alone with a 150.
On the back nine of Viroqua Hills, Gardner shot a 39 — the first Viroqua golfer to break 40 this season.
Sanwick, Collin Campbell and Cole Hewitt tied with 43.
VHS boys golf coach Aaron Cade said the conditions were pretty good at Viroqua Hills, May 13.
“The course was one the best we’ve played all year condition-wise,” Cade said.
Teeing off at the Holmen Invitational last Thursday on the Drugan’s course for the second time in five days, Cade said conditions still had not improved much from when Viroqua played there May 11 for the conference meet.
Cade said temporary greens were set up for two of the holes and one was shut down because it was still unplayable.
The Blackhawks shot a combined team score of 385. Host Holmen won the 18-hole golf invite with a 296.
Cade said the fact that Viroqua got paired with Holmen and La Crosse Central was a good thing.
“When you’re paired with better players you play better and I was excited for our kids to be able to play with Holmen and Central,” Cade said.
Leading the Blackhawks was Gardner with a score of 90, which included a birdie on the par 4, No. 16 hole.
Cade said Gardner drilled his tee shot just left of the green, chipped his ball right over the hole, and converted on the 12-foot putt.
But, Gardner wasn’t only Viroqua golfer to get a birdie.
Campbell, who finished his round of 18 with a 91, birdied his final hole — the par 4, No. 18.
Cade said Campbell’s drive went right down the fairway and his approach shot went to the center of green for a 6-foot putt.
Curtis Westfall shot a 99 at Drugan’s and Leif Thompson had a 104.
Cade said the golfers are finally getting warmed up. Just in time for the tournaments.
Viroqua was at the House on the Rock Golf Course in Spring Green, Wednesday for the Division 2 golf regional. The top four teams and top four individuals not part of the qualifying teams advance to the Evansville sectional Tuesday, May 28.
“If the kids shot the scores they shot on the back nine at Viroqua we will have individuals advancing from regionals to sectional,” Cade said.
