West Salem (4-1, 3-0) vs. Aquinas (0-5, 0-3) at UW-L
MVC SERIES: The Panthers lead 3-0 after winning by forfeit a year ago. West Salem beat the Blugolds by a combined score of 84-36 in their first two MVC meetings.
NOTEWORTHY: West Salem, which has sole possession of the MVC lead, is riding high after beating Holmen 28-27 last week, while Aquinas is limping along after falling to Central and losing for the 12th straight time since early last season. … West Salem QB Ryan Beirne (31-for-56-727 yards, 8 TDs-2 INTs and 33 carries-374 yards, 3 TDs) is having a monster season, and so is junior RB Brendan Holt (101-709, 6). … Panthers WR Trenton Foreman (14 catches-456 yards, 5 TDs) is looking for something to come his way after catching one pass for 8 yards last week. … Aquinas will need a very big game from either QB Jacob Savoldelli (44-79-508, 1-3) or RB Nick Cambio (61-280, 1) to have a chance.
Holmen (3-2, 2-1) at Tomah (2-3, 0-3)
MVC SERIES: The Vikings lead 15-13 after winning the last five games.
NOTEWORTHY: Expect the Vikings to be hungry in this one after losing to West Salem on the last-minute TD last week. … RBs Drew Becker (67-760, 11) and Kevin Koelbl (47-333, 2) and FB Mitchell Torud (78-372, 6) will get carry after carry, and Koelbl is coming off a career-high performance of 155 yards. … The Timberwolves allow 130.6 rushing yards per game, so their work is cut out. … Holmen has been vulnerable, at times, to the pass, so Tomah could get something going with QB Connor Prielipp (62-122-662, 4-7) and WRs Trey Gnewikow (26-253, 1) or Kyle Kroener (18-246, 2).
Onalaska (4-1, 2-1) at Sparta (4-1, 2-1)
MVC SERIES: The Hilltoppers lead 22-6 and haven’t lost to the Spartans since 2003. That gives Onalaska a 13-game winning streak against Sparta.
NOTEWORTHY: Both teams enter this game on the high of a big victory. … Onalaska beat Logan 28-26 by stopping a 2-point conversion on the final play, and Sparta knocked off its most important rival in Tomah. … Sophomore RB Nathan Lubinsky (105-593, 6) had a huge game with 181 yards against Logan last week, and senior QB Noah Skifton (859 passing yards, 390 rushing yards) have had a hand in just about everything the Hilltoppers have done. … The Spartans have relied heavily upon sophomore QB Cole Wisniewski (509 rushing yards, 9 TDs; 314 passing yards), so that’s where Onalaska’s defense will focus. … The winner stays in the chase for an MVC title.
Westby (2-3, 1-0) at G-E-T (5-0, 1-0)
COULEE SERIES: Westby leads 26-14, but the Red Hawks have won the last two meetings.
NOTEWORTHY: The question in the Coulee Conference this season might be which team will finish second to G-E-T? … If the Red Hawks will be challenged, it will be in this game, so if they win handily, get ready to hand over the championship. … G-E-T has a serious weapon in RB Ben Behan (60-561, 12), and his touches are what Westby’s defense will have to monitor closely. … G-E-T is playing its second game on its new field. … The Norsemen counter with QB Alex Gluch (43-107-760, 4-6), who has 509 passing yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT and 154 rushing yards and 3 TDs in his last three games, and WR Devontae Spears (17-298, 2).
Prairie du Chien (5-0, 1-0) at Platteville (5-0, 1-0)
NOTEWORTHY: This is a clash of the last two unbeaten teams in the SWC, and the Blackhawks are looking for their first significant win in a few seasons. … Prairie du Chien has a balanced offense with QB Gavin Gillitzer (800 passing yards, 352 rushing yards, 5 TD passes, 5 TD runs), RB Tyler Smock (69-563, 7) and WR Drake Coleman (17-274, 1). … Smock has 8 catches for 195 yards and 3 of them have gone for TDs. … The Hillmen average 43.8 points per game and are led by Ethan Bernhardt (81-118-1,233, 17-1) and WR Donovan Blevins (26-607, 11).
