The WIAA released its football playoff groupings early Saturday morning, and one of the bigger questions concerning placement was answered.

Holmen and Central are headed south instead of north in Division 2.

The Vikings (6-3), who beat Onalaska 49-14 for the MVC championship on Friday, are grouped with the Red Raiders (7-2), Baraboo (4-5), DeForest (7-2), Monona Grove (9-0), Oregon (7-2), Stoughton (6-3) and Waunakee (9-0) in their quarter of the 32-team bracket. Local Division 2 teams have been heading the opposite direction in recent years, and potential games against Waunakee and Monona Grove are ahead.

Coaches meet Saturday to determine seeds for each eight-team grouping, and brackets will be released upon the completion of those meetings.

Onalaska (7-2), Sparta (4-5) and Logan (4-5) are headed north and are grouped with Ashland (8-1), Hayward/Lac Courte Oreilles (3-6), Medford (5-4), New Richmond (5-4) and Rice Lake (7-2) in Division 3.

West Salem (6-3) and G-E-T (6-3) were placed in a group with Adams-Friendship (4-5), Baldwin-Woodville (5-4), Ellsworth (3-6), Maple Northwestern (9-0), Saint Croix Central (9-0) and Somerset (5-4) in Division 4.

Coulee Conference qualifiers — Westby (8-1) and Arcadia (5-4) — are with Bloomer (7-2), Cumberland (6-3), Elk Mound (7-2), Spencer/Marshfield Columbus (8-1), Spooner (6-3) and Stanley-Boyd (6-3) in Division 5.

SWC champion Prairie du Chien (8-1) is also a Division 5 qualifier and is grouped with Belleville6-3), Horicon/Hustisford (8-1), Lake Country Luthe(9-0), Marshall (3-6), Mayville (5-4), New Glarus/Monticello (4-5) and Palmyra-Eagle (5-3).

Melrose-Mindoro (8-1) and Brookwood (6-3) are with C-FC (3-6), Cuba City (5-4), Darlington (4-5), Fennimore (8-1), Lancaster (6-3) and Wauzeka/Seneca (9-0) in Division 6.

Division 7 qualifiers Bangor (8-1), De Soto (6-3) and Blair-Taylor (4-5) make up nearly half of their Division 7 group that also includes Eleva-Strum (5-3), Highland (5-4), Independence/Gilmanton (3-6), Ithaca (6-3) and Royall (4-4).
