HOLMEN — With Brooklyn Paulson hitting a pair of 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 24 points, the Holmen High School girls basketball team opened its season with a 55-47 nonconference victory over Eau Claire Memorial Thursday night.
Paulson was key down the stretch as she hit four free throws after the Old Abes had pulled within 49-45 with just over two minutes remaining. Paulson, a St. Mary’s (Minn) recruit, was 12-for-13 from the line as Holmen was 25 of 30 from the foul line as a team.
Holmen’s Kendra Leis was busy, too, turning in a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) while teammate Cailin Young was 9 of 10 from the foul line and finished with 14 points.
Eau Claire Memorial (0-1), which drained six 3-pointers in the first half and nine for the game, was led by Sydney Hazuga’s 15-point effort. Jessica Massey added 10 points for Eau Claire North.
West Salem 60, Sparta 39
SPARTA — Senior Haylee Gilster had a game-high 14 points to help the Panthers (1-0) kick off their season in impressive fashion. Gilster was one of three Panthers in double digits, joining McKenah Olson (10) and Brooke Bentzen (10).
Callie Ziebell had 13 to lead Sparta (0-2).
Brookwood 59, La Farge 23
LA FARGE, Wis. — Brookwood scored 31 first-half points en route to a season-opening win.
The Falcons were led by Allyson Nelson with 19 points and Amy Berg with 15.
Blair-Taylor 69, Black River Falls 47
BLACK RIVER FALLS — Blair-Taylor’s Samantha Fuselier led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Marlee Nehring scored 13. McKenna Dutton led Black River Falls with 12 points.
“I thought we did much better in the second half,” Black River Falls coach Amy Olson said. “(Blair-Taylor) has a lot of experience and they played solid.”
