The Caledonia High School football team that won an MSHSL Class AA state championship in November will have six players -- five in football, one in basketball -- on NCAA Division II and III rosters next season after commitments made during Wednesday’s National Signing Day.
Linebacker Mason Staggemeyer and wide receiver Andrew Goergen are among those — Holmen running back Drew Becker included — in the recruiting class for Winona State. Goergen caught 52 passes for 785 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as a senior, while Staggemeyer was key part of an overwhelming defense that held Pipestone to negative yards in the championship game. Becker rushed for 1,501 yards and scored 20 touchdowns despite carrying the ball just 143 times in 11 games.
Caledonia’s Austin Heim will play at Saint John’s (Minn.), Brent Robley at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) and Jordan Burg at Minnesota-Moorhead.
Onalaska’s Noah Skifton made official his previous announcement to play wide receiver at Minnesota-Duluth, and Central’s Greg Kohler confirmed his announcement this week to play at Minnesota State-Mankato. Kohler caught 52 passes for 725 yards and eight TDs and rushed for four touchdowns for the Red Raiders.
Caledonia senior Marten Morem also signed Wednesday to play basketball at Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).
