WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — The West Salem co-op gymnastics team followed up a fourth-place finish at last year's WIAA team state meet by placing fifth in Division 2 at Wisconsin Rapids High School on Friday night.

West Salem finished with a score of 134.5, while Whitefish Bay won with 141.7167. River Falls (140.55) was second, Mount Horeb (137.1667) third, and Viroqua’s co-op (122.7833) 10th.

The is is the 10th time that West Salem -- in its various forms -- has placed fifth or better at the state meet.

Individual competition in both Division 1 and 2 takes place on Saturday.

West Salem's best overall performance was a third-place showing on the uneven bars. The team put together a 33.167 that was only beaten by Whitefish Bay (34.6) and River Falls (33.217). Senior Emma O'Flaherty's 8.65 was followed by senior Ellie Tschumper's 8.283, junior Sydney Fitzpatrick's 8.15, junior Anna Gorski's 8.083 and freshman Sydney Hammes' 7.933.

West Salem was fifth in both the balance beam (33.6) and floor exercise (33.967) and tied for fifth on the vault. Hammes tied for ninth among top scores on the beam (8.717), Gorski's top score of 8.733 in the floor exercise tied for 15th overall, and Hammes' top score of 8.567 on the vault tied for 15th overall.

Viroqua’s best event finish on the day was the balance beam, where it took eighth (29.9). Sophomore Lydia Korn led the way there with an 8.55.

Viroqua's best event score was a 33.3 on the vault, which placed it ninth.Korn also had the team's top vault score with an 8.9. Freshman Kayden Kramer added an 8.5, freshman Katrina Koppa an 8.0, senior Hailey Gillen a 7.9 and sophomore Gracey Mlsna a 7.7.
