Wisconsin lawmakers approved an additional $38.6 million in transportation funding Thursday that will allow replacements of additional bridges in Vernon and surrounding counties.
With the additional funding, the state will provide $115 million for the 2018-2022 Local Bridge Improvement Program, which helps local governments to finance bridge replacement.
The state added 70 bridges to the previous list of 113 bridges, including a total of eight bridges in Vernon County.
In Vernon County bridges being repaired include Co. EE/Hwy. 80 (Baraboo River); Co. X/Hwy. 27 (Timber Coulee Creek); Hwy 162/ Hwy 35 (Chipmunk Coulee Creek); Town of Franklin, Tainter Hollow Rd. (Tainter Creek).
The local bridge program provides state assistance to replace existing bridge but does not pay for improvements. Counties and municipalities have to use their own money in order to make bridges wider or make other enhancements.
