READSTOWN -- Kathe Davis, May 7, 1943 – Aug. 13, 2017, of Readstown, passed away at her home Aug, 13, 2017, following a 10 year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was surrounded by family, friends and music.

Kathe was a retired professor of women’s studies and contemporary poetry at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. Kathe taught at Kent for 32 years, retiring to Readstown in 2009. She continued to write poetry following her retirement. Her poems were published in the Wisconsin Poet’s Calendar, The Lunar Calendar and in books: “American Zen: a Gathering of Poets (2004); the Pudding House collection “Fresh Water: Poems of Rivers, Lakes, and Streams (2002); “A Gathering of Poets (Kent State UP, 1992). In 2003, she won the Ohio Writer’s first place poetry prize. She received her PHD in English literature from Brown University.

She is survived by her son, Shaun Finney of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, (Amanda Poole Finney); her grandson, Quinn Finney, special friend, Kent Bubolz of Stevens Point, Wis.; and nine brothers and sisters, James Davis (Shirley) of Walla Walla, Wash., Coralee Davis (Barney Robke) of Okemus, Mich., D. Ben Davis (Susan Davis) of Portland, Ore., Donald (Dave) Davis (Lynn Musil Davis) of Rockford, Ill., Joseph Davis (Jayne Brogan) of Sonoma, Calif., Candace Davis (Fred Janis) of Evanston, lll., Glory Davis Boersma (Jeff Boersma) of Rockford, Marcy Davis (Bill Stanton) of Gays Mills, Julie Davis Varble (Bill Varble) of Rockford. She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews; and 27 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace (Dip) Davis and Kathryn (Kitty Strathman) Davis of Marengo, Ill.

She will be greatly missed by all including the members of the Kickapoo Paddling group led by Mark Drake. She was an active member until earlier this summer. A celebration of her life will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 9, at the Ark in Viroqua, with a memorial service in the Ark Theatre beginning at 4 p.m.
