On Saturday, June 16, Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center will celebrate the summer solstice with its annual Midsummer Fest. The Bekkum Homestead will be open for tours and there will be activities throughout the grounds for all ages to enjoy. Starting at 10 a.m., there will be demonstrations, music, wagon rides, trail hikes and food available.
“Troll rolls,” or sandwiches made with lefse as the wrap, and strawberry shortcake will once again be the returning food favorites. Donuts and barbeques will round out the picnic food visitors will find in the shelter.
At Midsummer Fest, visitors will see fjord horses, blacksmithing, weaving, knitting and embroidery demonstrations. The medallion hunt, children’s scavenger hunt, children’s crafts, trail hikes and dancing to live music will require comfortable shoes, but people can rest while they take a wagon ride to tour the grounds and learn about the Gundersen Arboretum. Of course, this Norwegian heritage event would not be complete without rosemaling and woodturning.
Members enjoy the day for free; nonmember admission is $5 per person, four people for $15, or a carload for $20. Children under 3 are free.
