Independence Day was a hot and humid one, with a high of 95 degrees and a low of 77 in Viroqua. A late afternoon thunderstorm caused the Viroqua Skylighters to launch fireworks July 5, and in Westby the show took place July 7 rather than on the Fourth of July.

La Farge celebrated the holiday with a parade in the morning, among other activities, some of which began July 3. The Vernon County Historical Society hosted the Marcia Andrew Strawberry Shortcake Social on the lawn of the Sherry-Butt House in Viroqua.
