Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports a single-vehicle crash occurred Saturday, Nov. 11, at about 8:45 a.m., in the town of Wheatland, between Red Mound and De Soto.

Stephen L. Kozerowitz, 79, of De Soto and Huntley, Illinois, was operating a vehicle east on Hwy. 82 and encountered ice from freezing rain. Kozerowitz lost control and the vehicle crossed the centerline. The vehicle went off the left side of the road, struck an uphill embankment, and rolled onto its left side. The vehicle slid along the roadway surface, rolled back onto its wheels, and came to rest slightly off the westbound lane.

Kozerowitz suffered minor injuries and was transported by Tri-State Ambulance to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, where he was treated and released. A passenger in the vehicle, Barbara M. Kozerowitz, 78, was not injured. Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. There was no airbag deployment.

The Wheatland Fire Department, Wheatland First Responders and the Vernon County Highway Department assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
