Rollover crash

The vehicle driven by Nancy Smith of rural De Soto went through a non-barbed wire fence before hitting a railroad tie used for a brace post. The accident happened Friday.

A rural De Soto woman was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash at about 6:55 p.m. Friday on Willenburg Road just south of the Mundsack Road intersection in the town of Genoa.

Nancy Smith, 71, was traveling south on Willenburg Road when she lost control of her vehicle, causing it to go off the road. The Smith vehicle went through a non-barbed wire fence before striking a railroad tie used for a brace post. This caused the Smith vehicle to roll over onto the passenger side of the vehicle, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith was unable to release her seat belt and was suspended in the air before the first members of the Genoa Fire and First Responders arrived and were able to safely release her seat belt and rescue her from the vehicle.

Smith was evaluated by Tri-State Ambulance at the scene due to the nature of the crash; she reported no injuries and was not transported. The front drivers’ airbag was deployed.

The property owner also assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
