Songs from the 1950s filled the Viroqua Elementary School gym Feb. 22 as students, their families and teachers danced away the afternoon at the school’s annual sock hop.

The tradition began 27 years ago when school secretary Brenda Haugrud, teacher Cindy Turner, parent Angie Lawrence and school Principal Kathy Trussoni enlisted teachers and volunteers to set up the dance and work at it.

When the Viroqua Parents Group was formed, they took over the event. The sock hop is a fundraiser for the organization, and is used for such things field trips and the end-of-the-year pool party.

For a nominal fee, students could participate in a cake walk, buy treats, toys, necklaces, bracelets, ‘50s pins, erasers, and inflatable guitars and microphones. A small admission was also charged.
