Jake Scott Holtz was Vernon Memorial Healthcare’s New Year’s Baby. Jake, the son of Mandy and Scott Holtz, was born at 5:07 p.m. on January 1.
Westby Middle School students recognized as December 2007 Students of the Month were: Patricia LaDue, Logan Bjerkos, Ethan Ingalls, Tyler Whitney, Courtney Nelson, Kylie Von Ruden, Kyle McClurg and Miriah Elbert.
Westby boys basketball team were on fire for more than four minutes of the first quarter – senior Collin Olerud had the opening three-point salvo – Thursday, Jan. 3, in the Westby Fieldhouse. Mark Westphal highlighted the effort with a game-high 17 points for a final score of Westby 52, Onalaska Luther 45.
The Times January 14, 1993 25 Years Ago On the afternoon of Monday, Jan. 4, the name of State Senator Brian Rude was read from the dais in the State Capitol Building in Madison. Cheers of local supporters erupted as he was sworn in for a third term in office. “We have attended every swearing-in so far,” said Brian’s mom Connie, “but every time is a new thrill for us.”
Westby’s eighth grade basketball team finished the season 9-0. Team members are: Mike Pedretti, Kory Dahlen, Tom Naegle, Mike Brudos, Brad Sternke, Jesse Barstad, Jordon Nelson, Jason Fremstad, Ryan Jasperson, Jon Lund, Matt Poessler, Tim Dahlen, Eric Evenstad, Randy Herold, Phil Arndt, and Jeremy Hanson.
Coon Valley Elementary School held its annual Geography Bee on Tuesday. Kevin Cornell, an eighth grade student, was the school champion. Josh Fencl, a sixth grade student, was the runner-up.
Tobacco Expo contest winners were Danika Gretebeck, who took first place in the youth 14 and older stripping contest with a time of 1:13, followed by her brother, Tucker Gretebeck, in second, and Travis Von Ruden, who took third. Champion spitter was Steve Trussoni with a distance of 20 feet, 4 inches.

Neil Hoven of Wanamingo, Minnesota has been contracted by the Westby Area Schools to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Terry. Mr. Hoven played football for three years at Luther and spent the last football season as an assistant coach of the Luther Varsity.
The Outstanding Americans Foundation announced today that Glen Hellwig and Betty Bekkum from Westby High School have been selected as Outstanding Teenagers of America for 1967.
The following members of the Hale and Hearty Homemaker Club and their husbands enjoyed their annual Christmas Party and dinner Thursday evening in the REA social rooms: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnsons, Walter Johnsons, Herman Tyvands, Orlando Nordlies, Merlin Rudies, Virgil Hansons, Keith Tainters, Glen McSchoolers, Fritz Enghs, and Mrs. Rueben Hall, Mrs. Herman Hall and Mrs. Maurice Running.

The tobacco warehouse of the Consolidated Tobacco company, with L. C. Bekkedal, manager, opened assorting and sizing operations here last Monday, with a present crew of about sixty-five workers, better than half of them being women. The tobacco coming in is in very good shape and good prices are being paid.
Selectees from Vernon County left last Thursday for Milwaukee for the induction examination. Those who passed will leave Thursday morning this week for Ft. Sheridan, Ill., to report for duty. A suitable program will be held at the circuit court room between 8:30 and 9:00 o’clock before their leaving.
Pvt. Reuben Bakken writes from Camp Wallace, Texas: “I was over at the service club. I sat around looking and before long I saw one of my good old Westby buddies, Odell Greenland from Avalanche. And I sure was glad then, just like I was at home. No matter where you go you are bound to meet some Norwegians which I enjoy very much.
