The less than ideal weather conditions on July 4 didn’t stop people from supporting the Westby-Christiana Fire Department’s Family Fun Day with plenty of families on hand. Fire Chief Gilbert Turben said you can’t predict what Mother Nature has in store on any given year so he was pleasantly pleased with the turnout, despite the annual fireworks being postponed until the weekend.
“We went from a picture perfect day last year to a triple digit, hot, humid and stormy holiday event this year, but that didn’t stop people from attending,” Turben said.
Turben acknowledged the extra effort of fire department members to relocate many of the scheduled outdoor activities to inside the fire station. Children’s activities included face painting and inflatable games. Tours of the fire station, trucks and equipment were also provided throughout the day as the weather allowed. Fire department members served food and root beer floats, while the Westby Snowflake Royalty and their parents dished up dessert.
The Wisconsin National Guard was not able to hold its rock climbing wall and outdoor fitness challenge as planned, due to the inclement weather. He thanked them for attending the event and hopes they can return to Westby in 2019.
Turben thanked the public for attending the annual event and for their continued support of the fire department and first responders. He also acknowledged all the fire department members spouses and significant others for all the extra hands that they provide to make the July 4th celebration a success, along with the efforts of the Snowflake Royalty and their families.
