The Chaseburg-Coon Valley Blues (CCV 7-5 overall, 5-4 MVL) had the chance to beat league-leading Sparta Miller on Friday, July 6, but fell short losing in extra innings 12-11.

Sparta 12, CCV 11

It took 11 innings for Sparta Miller to takedown the Blues, with CCV’s demise being a lack of pitching depth and a costly error in the 11th inning allowing the winning run for Sparta to cross home plate.

Ben Faga started on the mound for the Blues and pitched six strong innings, leaving the game with an 8-4 lead. Josh Knoll started on the mound for Sparta, but struggled with control, giving the Blues the opportunity for the win after they jumped out to an early lead in the second inning.

Sparta held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but a 6-run second inning, aided by three hits, an error and three walks, put CCV in command early, 6-2.

The Millers added a pair of runs in the fifth and eighth innings to close the gap, but the Blues responded with runs of their own in the sixth and ninth innings. Up 10-6 entering the ninth inning, CCV looked positioned to win, but a costly error with two outs resulted in a big 4-run ninth inning to tie the game (10-10) and force extra innings.

The Blues went up 11-10 in the top of the 11th inning, but ran out of steam on the mound giving Sparta the win with a pair of walk-in runs. Jordan Vaaler picked up the win for Sparta and Robson recorded up the loss in relief for CCV.

Sparta Miller’s Adam Klos was the leading hitter of the game, going 5-6 with a homerun, triple and 5 rbi’s.

The Blues were led by: Jack Dwyer 2-for-6 (2 rbi); Jeff Raasch 2-for-5 (2 rbi); Eric Peterson (2 rbi); Drew Tschumper (db, 2 rbi).

CCV traveled to Copeland Park on July 9 to play the La Crosse Legion before returning to action in Coon Valley on Wednesday, July 11 for the Burt Ekern Memorial Game at 7:30 p.m.

The Blues return to action after the All-Star game, traveling to Viroqua to face the Sox on Saturday, July 14 (1:30 game).
